IRAN AND THE WORLD IN THE SAFAVID AGE
Abstracts

Bernardini, Dr. Michele, Istituto Universitario Orientale, Napoli , The Conquest of Jarun by the Portuguese (1031/1622) in a FATHNAME kept in the Estense Library of Modena

The manuscript F.6.22 of the Biblioteca Nazionale Estense of Modena, contains a Fathname concerned with the Portuguese-Persian conflict over Jarun (Hormuz) in 1031/1622.  It is probably a work of Qadri Shirazi who is the author of two other Fathnames.  While the history of the manuscript itself is of considerable significance - it was acquired by Pietro della Valle in around 1628 - the text provides important evidence of events in a form continuing, if on a smaller scale, the tradition of the masnavis dedicated to the Safavid rulers.  The paper will provide an introduction to this kind of composition and will give a more extensive presentation of the factual content of the Fathname, with an analysis of Portuguese-Safavid relations during the period and some observations concerning the Persian Gulf as a strategic area during the seventeenth century.
