Fari Shams and the Exhibition

Fari Shams continues to explore the themes of mathematics and music in Linescapes of Thought - Secret Vision. By choosing to subvert the basic tenets of perception, the artist represents an intensely private experience of the natural world. This exhibition offers viewers a holistic experience of visual pilgrimage along a route of dramatic linescapes which function in concert to inspire reflection on concepts such as time, space and perception.

Linescapes of Thought - Secret Vision will include work in several mediums, from drawing and painting through to sculpture. Using various techniques, Shams suggests a tentative relationship between uncertainty, chaos and prime numbers, suggesting that perception is embedded within the timeless framework of mathematics. Different speeds and strokes of the brush are used in the paintings, the drawings' deliberate use of sequences, progression and repartition and the sculptures' musical references and inferences are all designed to invoke a sense of connection and structure.

Combining the objectivity and precision of a scientist, with the finesse and descriptive language of an artist, Shams' work explores the basic inter-relationships that exist between the disciplines of mathematics and music, to create a perceptual art form that navigates with assurance between an abstract, a figurative and a conceptual expression. Chaotic linescapes are imbued with overtones of hidden harmonic structure tempered with discord yet maintaining an ethereal elegance.

Shams engages the viewer in a visual dialogue which questions the certainty of perception and suggests a inextricable coexistence between illusion and reality.

Born in Iran, Fari Shams' work is undeniably influenced and inspired by its culture and history. The doctrines of Hafiz, Rumi, Sa'adi, Ferdowsi, Shamsi Tabriz and Omar Khayyam play a pivotal role in her compositions. Her work therefore shifts and migrates between the philosophical and the scientific, and provokes a contemplation of the unknown.

Her practice has evolved in a very immediate way with concerns that have preoccupied her as a young girl in Iran. It is an association that embeds her art with clarity and intent from an early stage, but also a connection that roots her practice in the very heart of Persia.
